Weed Barrier

A Weed Barrier Blocks Weeds to
Give You Beautiful Plants and Trees

A Weed Barrier blocks out weeds while allowing water, air, and nutrients to pass through to the soil. As a result, plants can grow up to twice the size of plants grown without fabric.

Research shows that woven polypropylene (the heavier the better) is best for stopping weeds and promoting growth. The better fabrics or landscaping fabrics on the market are UV-treated to withstand the sun's decomposing effects. A rule of thumb: the longer the fabric’s guarantee, the better it is.

Weed Barrier Fabric can be placed directly over grass but it is preferable to clear the area first. Prepare the planting area by spraying existing weeds and recurring ones with a nonselective systemic weed-killer that kills to the roots. Alternatively, remove all existing grass and weeds before installation.

If water pools on top of the material, it is only temporary. This material functions with a wicking process - meaning that once it makes solid contact with the ground, the water will flow through at the same rate that it can be absorbed by the soil. Once the process begins, water will penetrate almost immediately thereafter.

Easy One-Time Installation

STEP 1: Unroll Weed Control Fabric and cut material to desired length. Fit the “black side up and gray side down” around plants or cut slits in material to fit over plants. Overlap adjacent sections 3 inches. Secure ends of material to the ground with garden staples.

STEP 2: Install new plants by cutting X's in Weed-Shield at the location of each new plant. Plant your shrubs, trees and small plants right through the material into the soil beneath.

STEP 3: Cover with a 2 inch layer of organic mulch such as pine needles, wood chips, or shredded bark to protect it from the sun.

Landscape Fabric is the safe and easy solution to permanent weed control and weed prevention, but regular inspections are needed to check for such problems as insects, weeds growing through the planting hole, wind lifting the fabric, and need of supplemental watering.  And don’t forget -- “black side up.”
