September 2017
Greetings!
September and October are the months when professional contractors make the most of the season. Here are three ways to boost your backlog to have a very profitable fall:
Sell more to current customers. Mine your database and see which customers might be candidates for additional purchases. For example, customers who bought landscape plantings may now be ready to add landscape lighting. Make target lists for each type of add-on. Approach these customers directly: in-person or by phone. Show them how additional landscape enhancements can make yard care easier and boost their landscape enjoyment.
Review your past service checklists / evaluations. Remember those evaluation forms your technicians have been completing on every site visit? These forms record the site conditions and note additional services or upgrades required. They're filled with items either your technicians couldn't get to during in-season visits or where the customer said "I'll have that done later". Later is now! Follow-up and get the work scheduled.
Close the deal on open quotes. Go back through your stack of quotes that didn't result in a sale. How many never bought the service they were interested in? You don't know until you contact them. Follow-up and tell them about your autumn special offer. Many will ask "is the price still good?" Of course it is, because you want to stay busy.

Give Your Customers the Lighting Control They Want What if your clients could turn their landscape lighting system on or off from anywhere in the world with their cellular phone or tablet? With Kichler's latest control offering and the Vera app, they can. How does it work? It all starts with a Kichler Design Pro LED Controller and the VeraEdge or VeraPlus gateway unit. This gateway -- which looks and acts like a router -- creates a hub that links all of a home's "smart" devices together: including a Kichler Design Pro LED Controller. Using the Vera app installed on an iOS or Android device, the homeowner gives a command ("Turn on my landscape lights."), and the Vera gateway does the rest: sending a signal via Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Insteon or Bluetooth to execute the command. What landscape lighting functions can a homeowner control from the Vera app? Just about anything: zoning, on/off functions, scheduling and more. All settings and programs are Cloud-based, so every command transfers from one iOS or Android device to another. Power outage? Daylight savings time? Vera adjusts for these automatically. Plus, there's no remote control to keep track of. Homeowners can even turn "traditional" lighting devices into "smart" ones: a Vera connected plug-in can control a traditional Landscape transformer (replacing the timer), holiday lighting, water features, and more. What else can the Vera unit do? Kichler has partnered with home control expert Vera Control Ltd. because of the unique product they offer. Vera gateways let homeowners control not only their Kichler landscape lighting but other smart devices -- such as motion sensors and security cameras -- from their phone. There are no monthly fees or contracts for Vera users, just a one-time purchase cost for the unit. All a homeowner needs is the Vera gateway of their choice, an Internet connection and a smart device (phone, tablet, or PC) with the Vera app. Versatile add-ons like Amazon Alexa devices even offer voice command functionality. How to Calculate Drainage: Sizing Catch Basins Catch basins are an effective way to collect surface water that is draining to one specific area, like a low spot in the yard or below a rain gutter downspout. Surface water flows through the grate on the catch basin then exits through a drain pipe connected to the basin. There are several sizes of catch basins. To determine which catch basin is needed, you need to check the flow capacity of both the grate and the outlet where the drain pipe connects to the basin. Flow capacity tables have been created for each catch basin. These tables show the grates that fit each basin and their corresponding flow capacities. The outlet flow capacities are also shown for each basin. To determine if a particular catch basin will work for your situation, follow the following steps: 1.Calculate the runoff draining to the location of the basin 2.Find the table for the catch basin you want to install 3.Compare the runoff calculated in step 1 to the Flow Rate for both the grate and the outlet. These Flow Rates must be larger than the calculated runoff. If these rates are greater than the calculated runoff, then this basin will work for your project. If either of these values is less than the calculated runoff, then you must use a larger basin.
