DIY Fixes to Achieve Better Yard Drainage

Soggy yards can be annoying. They can create mud, kill grass, and become an eyesore. And, if wet areas are near the house, they can cause problems inside, too.

Below you will find some common yard drainage problems and fixes to keep your yard looking beautiful.

Downspout Runoff

Downspouts drain rainwater directly to the base of your home, and if it’s too close, it could potentially cause basement or crawl space flooding and foundation damage. You could simply extend the downspout further into the lawn, but that’s not necessarily the best – or most attractive – fix.

Instead, install a catch basin beneath the downspout. It will connect to drain pipes where the water can drain to a safe location, preventing water from creeping into your home’s foundation.

Consider selecting a high-capacity basin to hold high intensity storm runoff. It will carry the water a safe distance away from the house before allowing it to slowly permeate back into the soil.

Water in Landscaped Area

Landscaped areas can sometimes turn into basins that collect and hold water – from downspouts or just overwatering. This is especially dangerous when they are right on the exterior of the home. As mentioned above, water can seep in and create problems inside, too.

We offer the same solution for this problem – installing a catch basin.

Water Pooling in Yard

Water pooling in the yard creates muddy areas, often killing grass and even attracting pesky mosquitoes.

The best solution is using a dry well drainage system. A low spot in your yard will create a collection point for water in the surrounding area. With a dry well you are creating an underground cavity to temporarily hold water before it can safely soak into the soil. One great option is our Flow-Well system.

Water Pooling on Walkways

Water pooling on any kind of concrete patio or walkway can cause mold or mildew growth, unsightly staining, and of course slip hazards.

Often walkways and patios are bordered by grass or curbing which prevents water from quickly draining. Installing an underground French drain system, like our EZ Flo, can combat this issue, allowing the water to quickly drain into the pipe and then to a safe location.
